NGC 6960, NGC 6992, NGC 6995 – Veil Nebula – A Bright Nebula in Cygnus

  • Description: The Veil Nebula or The Lacework Nebula, is a large roughly 3 degree diameter region of nebulosity off the Eastern Wing of Cygnus so large it was divided up into NGC6960 Western Veil and NGC6992 and NGC6995 Eastern Veil, with knots of nebulosity NGC6974 and NGC6979. It is a region of superheated clouds of ionised gas and dust about 2400Ly away that resulted from a supernova from a star estimated to have been about 20 times more massive than our Sun that blew up ~10k to 20k years ago. The thin rope like filaments are portions of the expanding shock waves seen edge on and are estimated to be about the thickness of the average distance between Earth and Pluto for reference.
