Messier 103 – Open Cluster in Cassiopeia

  • Description: - Open Cluster of roughly 40 stars in Cassiopeia. Also known as NGC581. Apparent brightness of 7.4 magnitude and 6 arc minutes in size. Estimated to be 10kly (3 kpc) away and 22My old.

  • Camera: SBIG STT-8300M @ -35C Sensor Temperature using Baader RGB filters

  • Telescope: AP130EDT refractor, 1085mm at f/8.3

  • Exposure: 15 x 3 minutes each colour for 135 minutes total exposure time.

  • Location: RASC Calgary's WCO, Alberta, under bright moonlit (88% full) skies.

  • Date: 2023-12-23, at -20C and 99%Rh condensing

  • Processed in PixInsight with RCAstro tools, SPCC and GraXPert.


  • Description: This is a repeat of the above using the same telescope but a different camera and taken from the bright city

  • Camera: ASI533M @ -15C using Chroma RGB filters

  • Telescope: AP130EDT refractor, 1085mm at f/8.3

  • Exposure: 26 x 5 minutes each colour for 6.5hrs total exposure time.

  • Location: Calgary AB Bortle 9

  • Date: 2024-10-12
