IC2118 - Reflection nebula in Eridanus

  • Description: The Witch-head nebula is a reflection nebula in Eridanus, near Rigel. Dust reflects blue light from Rigel (on the right side here) while in the background is fainter, red emission nebula. Rigel is the bottom-right star in the constellation of Orion. South is up in this image, so this nebula is on the right side of Rigel when looking at it in the sky. The are also a few compact galaxies in the upper part of the nebula.

  • Camera: ZWO ASI2600MM Pro at -15C, gain 100
  • Filter: Antlia RGB and 3nm
  • Scope: Askar SQA55, 264mm f4.8
  • Mount: ZWO AM5N
  • Exposure: 5 x 10 minutes for red and green, 7 x 10 minutes for blue.
  • Location: near Elkwater, Alberta
  • Date: September 25, 2025
