Veil Nebula - Nebulosity in Cygnus

  • Description: The veil nebula is an expanding shell of material created when a star, about 20x the size of our sun, died in a violent explosion around 10,000 years ago. This expanding debris is located about 2400 light years from Earth. This wide-field image shows much of this expanding shell of gasses as well as some background nebulosity.

    Below is just the hydrogen-alpha part of the image, two hours through a 3nm filter.



  • Camera: ZWO ASI2600MM Pro at -15C, gain 100
  • Filter: Antlia RGB and 3nm H-alpha filters
  • Scope: Askar SQA55, 264mm f4.8
  • Mount: ZWO AM5N
  • Exposure: 6 x 10 minutes RGB, 8 x 15 minutes h-alpha for 5 hours total.
  • Guiding: ASI210MM via ZWO OAG
  • System Control: ASI Air+
  • Location: near Elkwater, Alberta
